Generally, the leader of the party who has the second largest membership in the House of Commons becomes the Leader of the Opposition. This person is often in the news and provides criticism of government action and policies. He or she leads opposition debates in the House of Commons, and suggests amendments to government legislation. The role of the Official Opposition is to offer the voters an alternative to the current government, and to encourage Canadians to vote for them in the next election.
